The incident occurred during a planned station shutdown due to a technical error.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, almost 100 cubic meters of coolant entered special protective enclosures and drainage systems. The cause was improper closing of the hatch in the reactor pool before the filling process began. However, the situation was quickly brought under control, avoiding serious consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there a threat to the population and the environment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The station operator, Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), promptly responded to the event and assured that the leak posed no threat. In their official statement, they stated: &#8220;Thanks to prompt safety measures, the level of radiation exposure is minimal and poses no risk to personnel or the environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) also confirmed the controlled nature of the situation. The entire leak was contained within special protective systems designed for such incidents. Radioactive wastewater will be processed in accordance with international safety standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consequences of the incident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the swift handling of the aftermath, this incident has drawn attention to nuclear safety in Europe. Considering that &#8220;Olkiluoto-3&#8221; is the most powerful reactor in Europe, any technical failures can raise concerns. Nuclear regulatory authorities have mandated TVO to conduct an investigation and provide a detailed report on the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will the leak impact the operation of the station?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual planned shutdown of &#8220;Olkiluoto-3&#8221; is proceeding as scheduled and is expected to be completed in early May. During this period, important checks and technical maintenance are carried out. Around 1000 specialists, including international subcontractors, are involved in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Previous reactor shutdowns were accompanied by delays, leading to an increase in electricity prices in Finland. The next planned shutdown is scheduled for the year 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusions: Is there a threat to Europe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, this incident did not result in serious consequences for the population or the environment. However, it has once again raised the issue of the need to adhere to strict safety standards at nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radiation leaks, even in small quantities, cause concern, especially in light of previous nuclear accidents worldwide.
