Why it is impossible to arrest Putin on a warrant from the International Criminal Court

Issuing a warrant for Putin’s arrest in The Hague was a real event. However, its significance should not be overestimated. In fact, the President of the Russian Federation is not at risk of arrest in the near future due to several reasons.

Diplomats emphasize that there are many high-ranking officials involved in the war with Ukraine. First of all, military officials come under attack, and bringing the Kremlin’s top officials to court is a long process.

Everything is possible

The representative of the US State Department for global criminal justice Beth Van Schaack explained the situation. She said that justice against Putin will not happen while he remains in the position of President of the Russian Federation.

It is impossible even to arrest him before he hands over the position to his successor. This is because he, like all heads of state, has immunity. Immunity will not allow him to be taken into custody by a court of any country, the ICC, or the Ukrainian special chamber.

We didn’t even start

The situation is complicated by the fact that, in addition, several other legal obstacles arise due to the high position:

– Ukraine cannot start the investigation process;

– it is impossible to prepare indictments, etc.

Another warning, made by Beth Van Schaack, refers to the fact that Ukrainians should be prepared for unpleasant surprises during this case.

The following conclusions can be drawn from all this:

– Putin will remain President most likely, for life. If necessary, Russia will change the Constitution or something.

– We should not hope for a fair fight and the impartiality of the judicial system.

Given the fact that Putin’s visits to Turkey and the G20 summit in India are currently being prepared, such an opinion has a basis.
