The unexpected advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) into Russia’s Kursk region has sent shockwaves through Russian media and Telegram channels. The lack of clear information from official sources has only fueled panic and confusion.
Information Chaos
At present, neither the Ukrainian nor the Russian side has provided official comments regarding the operation in this region. The primary sources of information remain Telegram channels and war correspondents, whose credibility is questionable.
Coverage by Russian Media
Official Russian media cautiously refer to the events as a “situation in the Kursk region,” avoiding terms that might incite panic. Their reporting resembles coverage of natural disaster aftermaths, such as an earthquake or epidemic. The reports focus on how Russian regions are sending medical brigades and offering shelter to those who lost their homes, while people line up to donate blood.
Lack of Political Conclusions
Interestingly, Russian media deliberately avoid making political assessments of the situation in the Kursk region, unlike in other cases, such as the attack on Crocus, where the source of the attack was immediately identified. Meanwhile, on the third day of fighting, explosions were already heard in the city of Kurchatov, where the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is located. In Sudzha, damaged vehicles are visible on the outskirts, and gunfire can be heard in the city.
Current Situation on the Frontline
According to the latest reports, fighting continues in the village of Anastasevka, located 40 kilometers north of Sudzha. The UAF’s goal is said to be reaching Lgov, and then Kurchatov. Footage has emerged showing captured Russian border guards being transported to Ukrainian territory. It is likely that some of them are conscripts. Earlier, it was reported that the UAF captured more than 40 Russian soldiers at the Sudzha checkpoint.
Videos have surfaced online showing a Russian shell being dropped near a local school. Despite this, no evacuation was announced. Thus, the Russians are destroying their own settlements, but this information is not being disclosed. Coincidentally, YouTube has nearly stopped functioning in Russia, and many people are beginning to understand why.
Zelensky’s Comments
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukrainian defenders are capable of surprising and achieving significant results, although he did not specifically mention the operation in the Kursk region.
